At the Casino

Back to the Belle Epoque

Today, we will go back in time… And more precisely to June 1900. It was on this date that the Casino de Contrexéville was inaugurated, designed by the Vosges architect François Clasquin. So let’s go to this monument, its restaurant and its hotel, for a first class trip.

A monument inspired by the greatest

Barely arrived at our destination, we go up the rue du Général Hirschauer for a few meters, and we find ourselves in front of a large building that is reminiscent of the Opera in the capital. We are told that it is normal, that François Clasquin, was largely inspired by Charles Garnier to build this casino. We approach, and push the front door.

Inside the building, the high ceilings become dizzying, the woodwork and paintings in Baroque style take us back to the time of the inauguration. One is almost ready to see men, pipes in hand and in three-piece suits, and women in their finest finery strolling through the corridors. The Casino is a veritable time machine, propelling us back to the early days of the 20th century.

Behind the façade, a thousand and one surprises

Facing us, a door surmounted by an inscription “The cinema – the theater”. On our right, the “Salle des jeux”, and on our left the “Salon de lecture”. In addition to being a traditional casino, we quickly understand that the monument also contains a two-in-one cinema – theater room. The reading room, meanwhile, houses temporary exhibitions on various subjects. We also spot the restaurant, aptly named “L’Entracte”. We decide to reserve a table for our lunch. But first, it’s time for the games!

Casino games, a return to childhood

We test a little bit all the machines, without betting too much money. Since we are casino neophytes, it’s more about having fun and seeing who will be the most resourceful among us, than really winning a bet or a game. Our brains are on fire, because these games don’t just require luck, they require thinking. And since thinking makes us hungry, we take a well-deserved break at the Intermission.

I book

L'Entracte, a natural setting for the Casino

We sit down at the table, and take advantage of the moment to observe the restaurant. The wood and the greenery surround us. The slate board hanging on the wall, on which the menu of the day is spread out, makes our mouths water… Vegetarians, fish-eaters, carnivores… All diets have their dish, as tasty for the taste buds as for the pupils.

The Cosmos Hotel, terminus of the space-time journey

After a good, healthy, local meal, we leave the Casino and head back up towards the Cosmos Hotel, located on Rue de Metz. We’ve made a reservation with the Tourist Office for the night, but first, we fully intend to take advantage of the Spa and the heated outdoor pool. Something to conclude our space-time journey with a smooth arrival, before joining our room for a new journey… In the land of dreams.
